Abstract

This study aims to understand how universal values are internalized through the accumulation of social capital and value transformation processes, considering young people as subjects, and how this process shapes their societal participation. The research has examined the accumulations of social capital, which influence the processes of self-formation and the shaping of social identities among the youth, as well as their roles in active citizenship and civil participation practices, within the context of relationships established with rights-based civil society organizations. A qualitative research design was employed in this study, which focused on young individuals active in rights-based youth civil society organizations. Semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis were conducted, adopting a phenomenological methodology. The principal findings reveal that interactions within rights-based civil society organizations enhance democratic values and active citizenship among youth. These interactions not only expand their social networks but also deeply impact their processes of subjectification, contributing to their positioning as more active and effective individuals within society. In conclusion, this thesis highlights the transformative power of civil society networks in shaping youths' processes of subjectification and their social capital within the framework of universal values. The active participation of civil society is instrumental in empowering young people to achieve effective societal engagement within the principles of peace, justice, equality, and sustainability. This perspective underscores the necessity for youths to actively protect their civil, social, and political rights, suggesting that their engagement in civil society activities can enable a more democratic, just, and sustainable social life.
