Özet
It is known that the transnational spread and popularity of Turkish series is increasing. At the core of this, multinational individuals who constitute the subject of the fandom created in the social media environment were identified, and at this point, an audience study was conducted in the context of the transnational fan community of Turkish series, which enables different cultural identities and audiences. Individuals who identify themselves as fans obtained from three levels in this study with situations that indicating to fandom, Turkish series and Turkey.
The author of this master’s thesis is in the process of making sense of the research by accepting that the popular taste approach in popular culture is formed through social media. In the context of the country's audience, utilizes the view that cultural and social capital transformation shapes taste. This issue, which has been dealt with to a limited extent in the literature, has been observed that the reasons for viewing in the literature are largely associated with the cultural proximity thesis. However, this thesis critically examines the cultural proximity thesis and argues that Turkish series should not be reduced to a viewing experience only because of establish intimicy with language, religion, culture and geography. Accordingly, it is associated with the virtual community approach as it aims to make sense of the viewing experiences and fandom practices of transnational fans in the social media environment.
Explored based on the resources of the Turkish Dramas Appreciation community on the Facebook platform and in-depth interviews with 24 fans located in multiple countries. The findings show that, TDAG was found to be a source of motivation and indirect influence of Turkish series fandom, actor fandom, Turkey fandom and other types of fandom that can be transformed into each other. However, popular taste does not have a determining feature in determining demographic characteristics, and individuals' cultural, social and economic diversity is shaped. It has been observed in the community that with an affective affinity arising from the popular taste that develops after the viewing experiences, the interest in Turkish laungauge, Turkish culture, Turkey, food and beverage practices, and music has increased and has been integrated into daily life practices. It is also connected to fans’ online and face-to-face activities.
