One of the most crucial aspects of humanitarian aid is the provision of temporary sheltering in response to the necessity of forced migration. This study arose from the question to what extent the discipline of interior architecture can be involved in the humanitarian aid process in emergencies. Temporary housing used in refugee camps in our country is undertaken by government institutions working in humanitarian aid. This research aims to identify the deficiencies between the literature and field work in the design and implementation process of temporary housing used in emergencies, through the institutions working in the field, and to propose a model that helps the design process for these deficiencies.
Temporary housing for emergencies must be approached from an interior architecture perspective to enhance quality of life, providing security and comfort. Our discipline not only focuses on creating appealing environments but also aims to contribute to societal welfare through functional design solutions. Hence, establishing the bond between interior architecture and humanitarian aid was deemed a crucial initial step in this inquiry.
This study was conducted in five phases. The first chapter concentrated on temporary sheltering and humanitarian aid, while the second part addressed spatial design guidelines for temporary housing. The third phase meticulously outlines the research design, portraying a design research approach that evaluates literature review findings and interview data through content analysis. Experts in the fields of migration and/or temporary sheltering participated in semi-structured interviews to assess the research conducted within this context. In the last step of the study, a design development model was proposed by integrating the perspective of the interior architecture discipline.
Through interviews, it has been observed that the two-way flow in terms of obtaining information from the literature and bringing field experience to the literature was weak. The model proposal focuses on strengthening this weak bond and presents a design guide that can be used in our country by exemplifying different formats and interactive usage. The research also seeks to increase awareness by opening up new avenues of study for the discipline of interior architecture.
