New information and communication technologies have currently become more
important in the private as well as in the occupational sector. The progress in
technology and the spread of the internet worldwide make the use of digital media
in the field of education and the learning of foreign languages essential. Thus
many forms of learning are created such as blended learing which is a
combination of attendance and online periods. To integrate web-based teaching
programs during lessons many learning management sytems were developed.
These systems are qualified for different forms of learning, support the
organization of learning processes and impart learning contents for communication
and coorperation to make common studying possible. The use of learning
management systems in education have been a research topic in foreign
languages didactics for a considerable time.
The following deals with computerized German as foreign language lesson with
the help of the free learning management system called Moodle and examines the
consequences in the four competences such as reading comprehension, auding,
wirting and speaking and additionally in acquisition of vocabulary and grammar.
Two known research methods from the educational science were applied for the
assessment: the quantitative and also the qualitative method. In relation with the
purpose of the study, a case study research paradigm was conducted. In the
department for German language teaching education of the Hacettepe university,
empirical data was collected in the first half year of the session in 2015-2016. 28
students who visited the course Advanced Reading and Writing Skills, participated
in this examination. The students were taught with class teaching phases and with
computerized online phases, in which the learning management system Moodle
was used, for nine weeks. This is a Blended Learning model which is the
combination of classical class teaching and E-Learning. These self-learn phases
are based on the psycholinguistic and didatic knowledge. Textbook SICHER B2
which consists of one course and work book which each are segmented in twelveix
chapters, was used in lessons. The textbook offers different exercises and also
current and authentic learning materials. Regarding this, online activities were
offered in the learning management system Moodle which were integrated with the
textbook SICHER B2. These activities helped the students to improve in language
through blended learning scenarios with Moodle which were added as additional
methodology in lessons. Evaluation sheets with different questions were used
weekly to emphasize the thoughts and the opinions of students about the usage of
the learning management system Moodle. A content analysis was conducted with
these qualitative data and the results were inductive topical coded and evaluated.
Additionally, a questionnaire “students perceptions towards moodle” which
consists of four parts was used on the last day of tutorial. The first part contains
general questions about the person. To learn the assessments of the students
about the learning management system Moodle, the second part was adapted
from the master thesis by Aylin Acar (2014). These assessments represent the
quantitative data of the examination. The evaluation of the examination was done
through the usage of the program SPSS version 22.0. The students were further
asked about their opinion on the learning with Moodle regarding competences and
the advantages and disadvantages of it. With that, qualitative data was achieved
which were inductive topical coded evaluated thorugh a content analysis.
The results showed that the usage of the learning management system Moodle
were positively accepted by the students both in teaching of German as a foreign
language and in delivery of foreign language skills and different competences such
as media competence, collaborative learning and individual learning. Particularly,
feedback has helped participants to see their deficiencies related to grammar,
vocabulary and sentence building. However, most of the participants think that
speaking skills are better supported in classroom education. Furthermore it can be
said that web based learning has increased motivation and become enjoyable by
the foreign language learning. The results also showed that the students assessed
the possibilities of the Moodle learning platform.
