Developments in computer technologies have affected architectural design as well as many other fields. Computer-aided design software, numerical simulations and virtual reality applications increase the speed of design processes and facilitate the evaluation of design options. In addition, these technologies are also useful in participatory design processes, creating more effective communication and collaboration between designers, clients and other stakeholders. Virtual reality applications take spatial perception and user experience to the next level, enabling projects to be examined and understood in more detail. This facilitates the transformation of the design process from a mere technical application into an interactive and democratic process. In this context, the thesis will propose an application model with the findings of a qualitative field research on how to integrate virtual reality into a participatory space design process. In the study, which will examine an example of urban renewal projects in Turkey—a significant application area for participatory design—the stakeholders will be presented with both two-dimensional visuals and a virtual reality-based model of the residences they will occupy. Subsequently, their opinions and views will be gathered through semi-structured interviews. After analysing the data obtained with qualitative research methods, it is expected to reach an application model proposal. The study aims to provide a detailed contribution to the relationship between virtual reality and architectural design, which is a newly developing field in the literature.
