The main purpose of this study is to describe how and how often the 5th grade school students, whose mother tongue is Turkish, use apology strategies in various situations that impose obligation of apology and to reveal the differences in apology strategies choices depending on gender. Another purpose of this study is to examine depending on gender that the students' perceptions of the severity of offence for the offence acts defined in various situations that impose obligation of apology. 363 5th grade students studying at a public school in Karaman participated in this study. The data were collected through the Discourse Completion Test (DCT), which includes twelve different situations that impose obligation of apology and a rubric that measures students' perceptions of the severity of the offence. Survey model, one of the quantitative research methods, was used in this study. The qualitative data obtained were converted into quantitative data with a version of Cohen & Olshtain's (1983) apology strategies adapted by Hatipoğlu (2012) and analyzed using the (SPSS) 26.0 Statistics package program. As a result of the study, it was seen that the students were sensitive to some context variables in the use of apology strategies and were often inclined to use explicit apology expressions. Although the perceptions of the students regarding the severity of the offence were similar according to gender, a significant difference was observed in the students' preferences for apologizing and not apologizing and the use of apology strategies.
