As humans have formed large societies, they have created overarching individuals within these societies to each other’s and to ensure the effective continuation of the existing social structure. Throughout history, Imagined Orders have determined many aspects of human perception of society and themselves through the use of images. Artists, who are active members of society who think critically about images, are not independent from these Imagined Order narratives. However, they are not necessarily limited to this framework in their own world.
Imagined Orders have determined how reality is perceived in societies where they are effective. Generally, the boundaries of accepted reality have remained within of framework of Imagined Orders. This can be shown though a brief evaluation of artistic Works throughout history. The remaining artistic Works reflect the spirit of their time and of course, the Imagined Order.
Accordingly, the “stories” that art works tell are shaped by this framework.
However, especially as we approach the contemporary era, humans have begun to realize the existence of this overarching narrative more and more. As the dominance of reason has increased, societies and artists have begun to question the Imagined Orders, sometimes unconsciously, but definitely leading to great changes from these inquiries.
After taking brief but comprehensive look at the concepts of reality and Imagined Orders, my goal is to question, at least attempt to see, influence of Imagined Orders in the Works of contemporary artists and of course, in my work.
