Ana Akım Medyanın İnternet Haber Sitelerinde Çevrimiçi Oyunlara Yönelik Bağımlılık Temsili
Abstract
This study aims to understand the role of representations in the mainstream media in the production of moral panic regarding online gaming addiction. For this reason, it is examined how the representations of online game addiction are framed in the news texts published in internet news sites.
This study basically consists of two chapters. In the first chapter of this study, digital games and the dynamic structure of digital gaming environment, types of gaming and massively multiplayer online games are emphasized in terms of comprehending the active role of digital game players gained by digital media as a field of new media-mediated communication are emphasized. In this framework, concepts that will help to understand online games and the main mechanisms of player participation are examined. Accordingly, it is intended the MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) genre to mediate the debates on gaming experience player interaction to a different extend. In this context, critical media literacy and game based learning notions are briefly addressed. This chapter also demonstrates researches on the field of digital game addiction in worldwide and in Turkey mainly adopt an approached based on media effects theories.
The second chapter of this study, consists of an analysis of the findings obtained through the qualitative-quantitative content analysis of selected news texts in the mainstream media internet news sites, related to the research subject. These findings obtained through the analysis are conducted on the news texts which published in 11 different internet news between September 1, 2015 and February 29, 2016.
News texts reviewed in this study consist of texts that reproduces forms of representations depending on online gaming addiction either direct or indirect ways.
