Mining is among the sectors with the highest number of work-related fatal injuries in terms of ratio among total personnel in Turkey, and almost every stage of mining activities has high risk. Therefore, it is very important to carry out occupational health and safety (OHS) studies in terms of personnel health and safety at the workplace. Risk assessments have an important place in these studies regarding health and safety. Risk assessment is the determination of the hazards that exist in a place or that may occur with external sources, and the analysis of the risks arising from the factors and hazards that will cause the identified hazards to become a risk. The classification and control of these hazards and risks gives us information about the comparison of the measures that can be taken.
There are many risk analyzes related to mining activities in the literature, but there are very few risk analysis related to drilling and blasting activities. Failures to be experienced in drilling and blasting activities involve risks not only in terms of occupational health and safety, but also in terms of operational efficiency. In the study conducted within the scope of the thesis, possible risks that may occur during drilling and blasting activities were determined and the results of these risks in terms of operational and occupational health and safety and environment were evaluated. In this study, each step in the process from the transportation of the explosives to the site to the completion of the drilling and blasting process in a mining operation was carefully examined and a risk analysis was made. The risk assessment made in a gold mine operated with the open pit method and this assessment were made with two different risk analysis methods and compared. Risk analyzes were made with L-type matrix and Fine-Kenney methods and applicable controls are established.
At the mine site where the thesis study was carried out, the current risk management measures applied on the drilling and blasting were studied, and at the same time, studies were carried out on the risks that were not determined beforehand and their mitigating actions were evaluated. The procedures and guidelines available at the mine site were examined.
In order to minimize the OHS risks in the mining sector, drilling and blasting risk analysis procedures and guidelines should be created. In the risk analysis conducted with two different methods, it was observed how much the classification changes due to the methodological differences. Thus, the risks that occur in terms of both operational and occupational health and safety and the category of these risks can be identified with more precision. In this context, a procedure was created according to the results of the analysis in the mine site where the study was conducted and studies were carried out to put it into practice.
