With the help of Theory of Planned Behaviour, which is a social-psychology theory, is possible to predict whether a behaviour occurs or not. According to theory “Intention”, that is directly related to “Behaviour”, is influenced by three factors: “Attitude Toward The Behaviour”, “Subjective Norm” and “Perceieved Behavioral Control”. Aim of the present study is to evaulate the elementary science teacher canditates’s sustainable behaviours in the context of Theory of Planned Behaviour. These behaviours are energy saving and using public transportation.
The study was conducted in 2015-2016 academic year spring semester in 14 universities and Turkey’s six regions: Central Anatolia Region, Black Sea Region, Aegean Region, Marmara Region, Mediterranean Region and Eastern Anatolia Region. Relational screening model was used. In the study two scales (Energy Saving Scale and Using Public Transport Scale), depending on Theory of Planned Behaviour were developed by researcher. In the development process of scales, firstly literature was investigated and open ended questionnaires based on the Planned Behavior Theory were prepared. Prospective teachers’ opinions were determined through the form, item pools and draft scale forms were generated. After expert opinions were evaulated, the pilot implementation was applied and factor analysis was performed. For reliability, Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficients were calculated for all subscales of the scales and for all. To collect data, first scale was applied to 1947 science teacher canditates and second scale was applied to 1870 science teacher canditates at different times of spring semester. PASW Statistics 18 and AMOS 23 were used to analyze data. Collected data were analyzed by structural equation modeling.
The Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficient of Energy Saving Scale’s subscales (N=1947) varies between .918 and .952. Energy Saving Scale’s Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficient was calcaluted as .944. The Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficient of Using Public Transport Scale (N=1870) varies between .860 and .948. Using Public Transport Scale’s Cronbach Alpha coefficient was calculated as .950. Findings of the study revealed that prospective science teachers’ attitudes toward energy saving behaviour were low, reference people and institutions were effective for explaining behaviour. “Intention” for energy saving behaviour was affected mostly by “Perceieved Behaviour Control”. Especially, data obtained from regions for using public transport indicated that the effect of “Attitude Toward The Behaviour” on “Intention” is generally moderate and high. In the study the beliefs were also evaulated. Normative people and institutions for energy saving behaviour are "Ministry of National Education", “Press publishing organizations”, “Political managers”, “Rulers of our country”, “School family union”. On the other hand, normative people or institutions for using public transport are "Municipal officials", "Traffic policemen", “Drivers”, “Pedestrians”, Political managers” and “Ministries”.
Based on the obtained findings, increasing of researches related to environmental-friendly behaviour and behaviour development, evaulating factors affecting attitude and implementation of a standart environment curriculum are suggested.
