Abstract
Healthcare provision is increasingly becoming patient-centered and the role of patients in the system is increasing day by day. Patients who arebecoming more conscious about health services are also increasing their demand for quality health care services. This draws attention to the concept of patient safety. Providing patient safety also involves various tasks and responsibilities for the patient. However, the patient needs to be strengthened about health to be actively involved in the process and play the expected role. At this point the concept of health literacy is on the agenda. It is important to focus on health literacy so that patients can be strengthened and contribute positively to patient safety by providing active participation in the process. This study was performed in the light of data from total 380 patients (232 female, 148 male) of whom applied to Düzce University Research and Practice Hospital internal science outpatient clinics between June 15 and July 15, 2015. In this study, quota sampling was used from non-random sample methods and sex-based quotation was used in the scope of the study. Surveys were conducted to collect data and the obtained data were analyzed with the SPSS 20.0 packet program. The purpose of this study is to determine the factors that affect health literacy and to examine the differences between the levels of participation of patients with different levels of health literacy in their own health care processes.
