Familial Mediterranean fever(FMF), an autoinflammatory disease, is frequently seen in our country. The disease is present in different forms in different age groups. Numerous disease-related lesions can be seen in the oral cavity. There may be recurrent oral aphthae and periodontitis as oral manifestations in FMF.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of oral and dental health on FMF patients and to evaluate the demographic characteristics of the disease in three different age groups (0-5, 5-11, 12-18), episodes of attack, duration and frequency of attacks, and to evaluate the acute phase reactant values. A total of 378 children with FMF were included in the study. 199 patients' oral and dental health assessments were performed. Symptoms of the disease of the investigators were at the age of 5 years and below of the age of onset of 69%. The most common symptoms of the patients were fever, abdominal pain and joint pain. In the dental examinations made, 83,4% of the patients had milk tooth, 52,3% had permanent tooth decay and 91,5% had any tooth decay. M694V was significantly higher in patients with homozygotes than in those without dental caries (p = 0.025). In the past six months, the presence of any tooth decay in patients with an attack was significantly higher (p = 0.017). Patients who used regular medication were significantly lower than those who did not use the gingival index (p = 0.005).
In conclusion, this study showed that patients with M694V mutations in FMF patients had a more serious illness and that tooth decay was more frequent in this mutation. It has also been shown that the frequency of attacks of FMF patients with poor oral and dental health is increased.
