This was a randomized controlled and experimental study including repeated measures and two parallel groups which was carried out to determine the effect of nurse navigation program developed for postpartum mothers on their self-care power, life quality, anxiety and depression risks and physical symptom severity. 64 primiparous women (S:32, C:32) who admitted to the maternity outpatient clinic of a Gynecology Training and Research Hospital, who were at 36 weeks and more gestational weeks, who met the study inclusion criteria and who were volunteer to participate in the study were enrolled. Asssignment of the participants to study and control groups was carried out by stratified block randomization method. The study was completed with 61 women (S:31, C:30) due to the withdrawal of one woman from the study group and two women from the control group (S:31, C:30). Data of the study were collected between May 31 and December 30, 2021 by using “Sociodemographic Data Collection Form”, “Postpartum Mother and Newborn Evaluation and Identification Form”, “Postpartum Mother and Newborn Problem Assessment Form”, “Postpartum Mother and Newborn Follow-up Assessment Form”, “Self-Care Power Scale”, “Postpartum Quality of Life Scale”, “Postpartum Specific Anxiety Scale”, “Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale” and “Physical Symptom Severity Scale”. The study group was given Nurse Navigation Program-based nursing care which covering three home visits, four phone calls and short messages sent at five different times besides routine hospital care. Control group underwent standard postpartum care practices and continued to be followed up. Frequency, percentage and descriptive statistics, Chi-square test, Fisher’s exact test, independent samples t test, Mann Whitney U test, Friedman test, Pearson and Spearman coefficient of correlation were used to analyze data. The incidence of postpartum complications was found to be lower in the study group compared to the control group; and, the frequency of the postpartum follow-ups in the study group was found to be significantly higher than the control group (p<0.05). Moreover, mean self-care power and postpartum quality of life scores of the women in the study group were found to be increased than those in the control group and their mean depression and anxiety scores were found to be decreased (p<0.05). It was also determined that nurse navigation program-based care given to the primiparous mothers was effective in improving mother’s health. This program can be used to promote maternal health by being integrated into the current health system.
