Abstract

The data-intensive information production process has brought along some opportunities and challenges for all stakeholders of the research process, especially researchers, funders, publishers and librarians. Making use of the data created by other scientists is a precaution against the loss of time and effort for researchers, and it also prevents high-cost public expenditures for research. Undoubtedly, this has played an encouraging role in the acceleration of scientific developments, the addition of new data to the increasing amount of data, and the advancement of open science. On the other hand, research data, which is the guarantee of the transparent research process, has also caused researchers to encounter difficult slopes in large data mountains. This situation has brought along data management processes for university libraries, one of the important stakeholders of the research process, aiming to organize, store, protect, access and reuse data with appropriate infrastructure and tools. The aim of this study is to reveal the roles of libraries affiliated to research and candidate research universities in the process of research data management, within the framework of infrastructure conditions, educational requirements, policies and ethical principles. Within the scope of this research based on the qualitative method, interviews (face-to-face, online and over the phone) were conducted with 15 participants (identified with the guidance of the institution managers) who are responsible or have the potential to be responsible for the processes related to the management of research data. In addition, the data about the storage potential of the research data of the researchers who are members of the relevant universities in the data warehouses were obtained from Zenodo and Aperta and presented in the theoretical part of the research. The findings obtained here are associated with the qualitative findings and results of the research. Findings based on participant opinions showed that in universities, tools and techniques such as cloud storage, the use of modern techniques and devices and service providers, which are required in the process of research data management, as well as resources such as budget, infrastructure and personnel are not sufficient. It is thought that this study will draw attention to the benefits of research data management services to universities by revealing what kind of roles the libraries affiliated to research universities play in the process of research data management. It is hoped that the research will also contribute to the limited literature on the subject.
