This research aims to reveal the care burdens and mental well-being of adult family members living in the same household with caregivers within the scope of home care practice for individuals diagnosed with chronic mental illness and to determine the effect of the care burden on the mental well-being of the individuals participating in the research.
In this research, which was carried out with quantitative research method, relational screening model was used from the screening models. A total of 442 people were included in the study, including 313 caregiver family members who benefited from home care practice and volunteered to participate in the study, and 129 adult family members living in the same household. The Sociodemographic Information Form, Zarit Caregiver Burden Scale and PERMA Well-being Scale were used as data collection tools. The SPSS V27 package program was used for the analysis of the data.
It was concluded that 54.5% of the caregivers within the scope of home care practice were male, 45.5% were female, they were at least 20 years old and at most 80 years old, and the average age was 46.6. It was concluded that 70.5% of adult family member participants were female and 29.5% were male, they were at least 20 and at most 72 years old, and the average age was 48.
In the research, it was concluded that the care burden of family members who care for individuals with chronic mental illness within the scope of home care practice is within the scope of severe burden. In terms of mental well-being, it is possible to say that the average score of the scale is at a low level. In the results of the research, it was determined that the care burden of both the caregivers within the scope of home care practice and the adult family member participants negatively affected their mental well-being. In this context, it was concluded that as the care burden of the participants increased, their mental well-being decreased.
Findings highlighted the need for social work interventions and social policies to reduce the burden of care for family members who care for individuals diagnosed with chronic mental illness and to increase their mental well-being.
In this context, primarily in the field of mental health, in order to reduce the burden of care for family members who care for individuals diagnosed with chronic mental illness, increasing the number of Community Mental Health Centers in proportion to the number of individuals diagnosed with mental illness, monitoring the mental health of caregivers, and the implementation of home care, which is a social policy practice that it should be presented to individuals on the basis of human rights are among the suggestions.
