Özet
Today, double reed is needed in order to gain sound from the four-pieced bassoon, which is generally constructed from a maple tree. Created by folding in equal size and dimensions, the bassoon reed is constructed by cane grown in Turkey. Even the fine details such as, the area of planting, the harvesting and the processing period affect the sound efficiency generated by the reed. Bassoon reed construction requires high concentration and a determined combination of various factors. During this period, preparing the thoroughly chosen cane material for the construction of a reed in most appropriate conditions is important for each bassoon player.
The soaking period enables cane fiber to absorb water and soften the reed. The cane is prepared according to the measurement and width regulated by the machines. Further the canes were left to dry so that the water within the fibers evaporates. The soaking period is vital for the correct reed machine utilization. In case the cane is insufficiently soaked, the friction of the knives within the machines increase and cause deconditioning in addition to the changes in the width of micron value.
In this study, the convex region of the cane utilized in the making of a bassoon reed was observed within three, six, twelve and twenty-four hour periods of testing ideal soaking period for abrasion. The archetypes, which were prepared as a result of this observation, were presented to well-known musicians in the field and requested to answer some questions. As a conclusion to this study, the effect of the determination of timing of soaking period in the making of bassoon reeds on the performance of a musician has been found. Furthermore, the current study aspires to become an example to the individuals who make bassoon reeds.
