Maurice Edgard Vieux who was a 20th century violist, composer and pedagogue had gotten his first viola training from Théophile Laforge who was the first viola instructor of Paris Conservatory that was built with innovations and developments in France after the French Revolution. Vieux also had trained in this conservatory, worked in many orchestras actively and had been a soloist. He got an honor legion in 1930, and in 1931 he was named as the Chivalry of the Leopold Order by the King of the Belgium. Vieux composed etude books, solo works and works with piano. Other than these, he had made arrangements for other instrument works. Viola music literature which was limited before expanded on Vieux’s coattails and he pioneered for other composers in order to exercise for this instrument. Many composers such as Max Bruch, Henri Brüsser and Gabriel Grovlez dedicated their works to Vieux which were composed for viola.
This work is a research of the contribution of Maurice Vieux’s etude book “Vingt Etudes Pour Alto” (20 Etudes for Viola) to viola technique and analyzing his etudes in terms of technique and musical. A research method was followed with analyzing on the effect of the viola technique and the interpretation of the etudes by examining the data on the subject, written sources, academic journals and related articles. The musical and technical structure of these etudes, which have not been analyzed until today, has been examined and presented as a source; the data that has been researched and revealed has been collected and reported. This study is intended to be a guide to assist those who will perform Vieux's ‘Viola in 20 Etudes’.
