Time is considered as a concept expressing a process and a criterion used. It is
known that atomic clock units are the most sensitive units in this field and are used
in satellite systems on the basis of obtaining time precisely. In the light of this
information, with the help of satellite atomic clocks, less costly and more precise
time management and usage has emerged in the world.
Global Positioning System (GPS) – Global Positioning System-based timing and
synchronization systems are systems based on pervasive and accurate
timekeeping, which are constantly evolving. In GPS-based systems, they work in
conjunction with an atomic oscillator, that is, GPS-based timing and synchronization
systems created based on signals from GPS, to provide the time function to the
systems continuously.
Within the scope of the study, it is aimed to demonstrate the capability of a GPS
receiver as a reference time source needed in these environments where it cannot
provide reliable timing solutions in its current state and in many sectors, especially
aviation, and evaluate its results.
In the design made with the PLL integrated circuit, various measurements were
taken with and without the GPS signal. In this way, the desired and cost-effective
structure of GPS-based timing and synchronization systems has been obtained. At the end of the study, deviations / temporal shifts in the order of nanoseconds were
observed and results with acceptable accuracy and precision were obtained.
