Abstract
This thesis work aims to improve the efficiency of cooperative ARQ protocols using network coding. Network coding seems an ideal candidate for improving the performance of ARQ as it achieves the diversity gains provided by user cooperation, and also utilizes the data rate advantage of combining packets. The main goal of this thesis, contrary to existing studies considering very limited cases, is to investigate the cases and methods which are well-known in the network coding literature, in the context of network coded cooperative ARQ. In addition, adaptation of recent packet combining methods developed for physical layer to link layer for ARQ was investigated. Novel ARQ strategies using these methods were proposed, and their performance was investigated. As opposed to simple error models commonly used in the literature, realistic fading channel and packet error models were used to develop new strategies.
