Abstract
The purpose of this in vitro study is to investigate the biomodulatory effects of plasma arc welding (700-2500 nm, 650 W, 10-4 W cm2) on three-dimensional (3D) cell cultures and to evaluate the results for bone tissue engineering applications. In the first part of the study, porous chitosan scaffolds were prepared by freeze-drying technique. In the next part of the study, irradiation procedure was determined by several parameters i.e. irradiation time, frequence and distance. For the procedure of irradiation, primary studies were carried out using specially designed plasma arc welding. The results showed that, light-induced temperature rise did not affects cells when the distance between the lamp and the cells was 10 cm and the frequency of administration was daily. Moreover, light was applied for 5 min and 10 min to the cells in TCPS (tissue culture polystyrene dishes) and in chitosan scaffold groups, respectively.
