ACAT AKGUL, Fehime. In the 12-15th Centuries Mardin: Cultural Environment, Educational Buildings and Kasımiye Madrasa, Master Thesis, Ankara,2022.
Mardin Kasımiye Madrasa is located on a very sloping land outside the area known as Bab-ı Zeytun in the southwest of Mardin. The building is mentioned as Kasım Pasha Madrasa in Ottoman Foundation records. Kasım Pasha madrasah was recorded at Ottoman period foundation records as “zaviye and masjid” or “medrese and zaviye”.
Mardin, which has hosted many civilizations in the historical process, is one of the most important cities of the Southeastern Anatolia region and the Middle Ages, forming the apex of the Fertile Crescent, which begins in the Mediterranean and extends to the Persian Gulf at the other end. The city, which is the product of a vibrant cultural environment, is one of the rare cities that has preserved its importance throughout history and hosted many civilizations. It is seen that the city texture and physical structure of Mardin developed and shaped during the Artuqids period, which ruled in the region, and continued as an architectural tradition. Akkoyunlu and Ottoman States, which dominated the city and the region after the Artuqids, continued the tradition that the Artuqids cared about in shaping the urban architecture.
In our thesis; By examining Kasımiye Madrasa in terms of plan, architecture, material/technical and ornamental features, the reflection of its interaction with Mardin and its neighboring cultural environment on architecture has been tried to be evaluated.
It is thought that our structure, which is very solid today, has similar characteristics with the madrasah architecture built in the Artuqid Period, and that it was built in the last period of the Artuqid Period and completed by the Akkoyunlus.
