The non-appropriation principle is a principle that has been in effect ever since the beginning of space law around 60 years ago. This principle which rules that no state can appropriate land in space has also wholly experienced the development of space law. In this thesis we will look at how this phase has affected the non-appropriation principle and whether this principle's current interpretation is enough for the future plans of space technologies. We will first be looking at every aspect of the non-appropriation principle along with its historical development and its relations with the other principles. After that, we will be looking into how the planned space settlement projects will affect the non-appropriation principle and whether a change will be needed in space law to be able to carry them out.
