The most important factor that sustain societies and bring them to the future is culture. One of the elements of culture created by societies is folk songs. Like every other society in the world, Turkish people have a unique and rich culture. One of these cultural elements is folk songs. One of the regions in Anatolia where the tradition of folk songs and stories is most alive is Osmaniye, where people lived a nomadic life for a long time. In this study, the region’s traditional narrative folk songs and the songs of the performers who composed their own songs that we can detect was compiled and recorded with the methods and techniques of folklore compilation; Those recorded narrative folk songs were examined with a holistic and interdisciplinary approach mainly through contextual and text-centered folklore theories while taking advantage of the data of different disciplines such as history, social psychology, history of religions, musicology, and ethnomusicology.
In the first chapter of the thesis, after the purpose and importance, scope and limitations, methods and techniques of the study was mentioned, the historical and socio-cultural characteristics of Osmaniye, our region of study, are described in order to provide a better understanding of the cultural structure in which these folk songs are created and performed. At the end of the same chapter of the study, main studies on narrative folk songs in the region and in Turkey are mentioned. In the second chapter of the study, the definition of culture, the importance and place of folk songs in Turkish society, compilations of folk songs, folk songs, bozlaks, narrative folk songs and the relationships between narrative folk songs-ballads are discussed.
Minstrels have a crucial role in the creation, conveying, and dissemination of folk songs. Karacaoğlan and Dadaloğlu are the most important minstrels in our region of study. In the light of this information, In the third chapter of the study, detailed information about the minstrels tradition in Osmaniye, the tradition of Karacaoğlan and Dadaloğlu are given. Later in the same chapter, the performance places of narrative folk songs are mentioned. In the fourth chapter of the study, the diversification, structural, thematic, melodic, functional and language expression characteristics of the compiled narrative folk songs are explained. In the fifth chapter, the mythological elements in the compiled narrative folk songs are examined. The compiled narrative folk songs are interpreted in the context Performance Theory under the main themes of "performer, listener, and context" in the sixth chapter of the study. In the conclusion chapter, the results we reached about the narrative folk songs in Osmaniye are presented, and the text of 450 narrative stories are given in the text section.
