Lexicography has emerged as an independent science since the second half of the 20th century. Lexicography is divided into two as theoretical and practical. In the theoretical field, the principles and methods of dictionary writing are emphasized. The information obtained through theoretical studies facilitates the work of the lexicographer in the dic-tionary writing process and contributes to the writing of qualified and purposeful dicti-onaries in practice. Definition is one of the essential subjects of lexicography. Monolin-gual general dictionaries, which is one of the most common dictionaries, constitute the most important material for definition studies. One of the most important general dicti-onaries of Turkish is the Turkish Language Association Turkish Dictionary. In the 11th edition of the Turkish Dictionary, there are 2115 lexical units taken from the dialect and presented to the dictionary user with the label of hlk. “dialect”. Lexical units of dialect can show different features from the standard language lexical units in terms of the spe-cial meaning and the methods used in their definitions. In this thesis, definition theory is discussed in the theoretical sense and the methods used in the definitions of 2115 lexicons with hlk. label in Turkish Dictionary are examined through the elements discus-sed in the theoretical part. The methods used in the definitions of the words from the dialect were determined and the methods that were not used in the lexical units in the standard language were also determined. The headword choices, definition tendencies and deficiencies of the Turkish Dictionary in the dialect words are emphasized. In this study, what should be considered while making definitions in the dictionaries is discus-sed in the scale of the dialect words taken from the Turkish Dictionary and solution suggestions are presented within the framework of the principles of lexicography.
