Özet
This study was intended to understand the oppressions and oppresion-related life experiences of people with visual impairments in the context of intersectionality. The research focuses on the intersections between the concepts of ‘disability’ and ‘gender’, ‘age’, ‘sexual orientation/gender identity’, ‘religion/belief’ and ‘ethnic origin’ through the theoretical principles of anti-oppressive practice that is based on the values of equality and social justice. The study was carried out with a qualitative research method. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 23 people with visual impairments. The data were thematically analysed with Maxqda software. Findings indicate that intersectional oppressions have intertwined, multi-layered and dynamic aspects in interpersonal, social and structural levels and affect the lives of individuals with visual impairments in a multifaceted way. This multi-layered and dynamic structure presents a framework ranging from the issues related to interpersonal relations such as devaluation, exclusion, restriction, and harrassment to the perceptions and assumptions at the societal level, and institutional processes and mechanisms. It also reveals the spesific dimensions of oppression and oppression-related life experiences in each intersection. The results point out the importance of multi dimensional perspectives and approaches on the issues of social work education and practice, legislation and policy, institutional structres, cooperation mechanisms, and public awareness.
