Because of the increasing energy need and the development of technology, the tendency towards the oil and natural gas industry has also increased. Interest in offshore oil and gas activities has also increased. Offshore activities in the sector are an important ingredient of the whole demand and supply system of petroleum and natural gas. However, while offshore activities are carried out, some negative effects occur in the marine environment. Therefore, activities carried out on the seabed are among the sources of marine pollution.
While seabed activities are carried out, necessary precautions should be taken diligently to prevent and reduce marine pollution and to protect and preserve the marine environment. Indeed, pollution from seabed activities is not a local problem. On the contrary, it is a regional or global problem with the obvious propensity to harm all societies. With a view to addressing this eventuality, local, regional and global regulations regarding environment and environmental protection have been made.
As a necessity and result of being a person of international law, states that cause this pollution or the states responsible for the behavior of the people or organizations that cause this pollution have a number of responsibilities and obligations. The 2011 Advisory Opinion given by the Seabed Disputes Chamber regarding the responsibility from the activities on the international seabed is very important.
