The meaning and content of expression in arts start changing in the twentieth century. Prior to this change, expression bore an intense relation with representation in arts. Describing a subject by creating an image or a form and presenting it was a phenomenon that defined expression. In time, however, various criticisms were voiced about the traditions invented in the field of arts with the purpose of changing its structure. Through the criticisms towards the components forming the structure of painting and sculpture, the relation between representation of the object and the narrativity established through the created representation started changing in these disciplines.
Classical representation was eliminated with the rejection of perspective creating an illusive optical space in painting together with the form becoming discussible on the same level as the surface. What is now visible in painting and sculpture is not simply a representation of a subject but more of a new understanding of expression which emerges from the conditions of painting and sculpture and starts connecting with the world directly. Following the rejection of tradition, every one of these various components in arts, which were beginning to be separated with the questions raised towards the structures of these disciplines, emerged as a new value. For instance, in painting, the start of discussions about the surface on the same level as the form led the way for colour, which is a significant element in this relational condition, to become a phenomenon that makes its own qualities open to discussion.
This report aims to base expression, which is the research subject of this report and an important phenomenon for the creation of an art piece, on the relation it has with action and the concomitant creative act. Within this scope, certain different concepts are mentioned to support the purpose of the report. The place and significance of these said concepts are likewise mentioned, such as the contribution of the expressive aspects of an action to the creation of an art piece. Some pieces were created based on this approach and these are supported by providing examples of artists, who paved the way for new ways of expression in the field of arts by addressing art structurally, and by interpreting their artworks.
