The aim of this research is to investigate the relationship between attachment styles of 3-6 year-old preschool children with single and married parents, and of these parents to their own parents. The materials of this study using convergent parallel design among mixed research designs are Doll Story Completion Task, Parental Bonding Instrument, Relationship Scales Questionnaire, parental interview, and demographic information forms. The study sample, which is from official kindergartens under The Ministry of National Education, is 40 children whose parents are married and their parents, 40 children whose parents are single and their mothers. The quantitative data is analyzed using t-test, chi-square test and Mann Whitney U test. The relationship between single and married mothers' attachment styles to their parents and children are observed using Spearman's Rho. The qualitative data is analyzed using content analysis.
It was observed that among children with married parents, 48% developed secure attachment, while 53% had insecure. 70% of children with single parents had secure attachment when 30% of them had insecure. There was no significant difference between attachment styles of children with married and single parents and gender, caregiver, and duration of divorce and marriage. There was a significant relationship between children’s attachment styles and the marital status of the parents, while the relationship was not significant between the mother’s and child’s attachment styles. There was a moderate, significant, negative relationship between the secure attachment of married mothers and their perceived attention/control behavior, while this relationship was moderate, significant and positive among single mothers.
