The aim of this study was to investigate the mediator role of general self-efficacy in the relationship between the parental acceptance-rejection perceived by different faculty students during childhood and psychological symptoms. The sample of the study consisted of 388 students aged 18-30, who studied in various universities in Turkey. The research data were obtained by using Demographic Information Form, Parental Acceptance-Rejection Scale, General Self-Efficacy Scale, and Brief Symptom Inventory.
The Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used to evaluate the relationship between the variables, Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) was used to determine whether the main variables in the study differed in terms of the faculty attented and indirect effect approach of Hayes (2018) was used to determine the mediator role of self-efficacy in the relationship between parental acceptence-rejection and psychological symptoms.
According to the results, there was a positive relationship between perceived parental rejection and psychological symptoms, a negative relationship between self-efficacy and psychological symptoms. As the result of the mediating variable analysis, it was determined that the self-efficacy belief played mediating role in the relationship between perceived maternal and paternal rejection and psychological symptoms. Moreover, the relationship between perceived maternal and paternal rejection and psychological symptoms was mediated by the only beginning dimension of self-efficacy. Finally, self-efficacy beliefs and psychological symptom levels differed in terms of the faculty. The results of the study were discussed on the based on related literatüre. Clinical implications, importance, and limitations of the study were discussed and suggestions for future studies were given.
