KARAKAYA, Yunus. Mahmud I’s Patronage in the Modernization period of the Ottoman Empire (1730-1754), MA Thesis, Ankara, 2020.
Our thesis discusses developments in the first half of the XVIII. Century, when modernization movements began, and the years of reign of Mahmud I (1730-1754). Reformation attempts that started in the Tulip Period (1718-1730) were interrupted by the Patrona Halil Rebellion in 1730. The rebels were killed with the determined stance of Mahmud I, who came to the throne in the shadow of the rebels, and with the support of the state officials, modernization movements continued at an accelerated pace. Our study tried to question the effectiveness of his personality in the Ottoman state administration modernization efforts by evaluating with period sources Mahmud I’s shahzadeh and sultanate years, who remained in power for twenty-four years
The period of Mahmud I, in which Ottoman State successfully fought with Russia, Austria and Iran, was recorded as a brilliant period in which both military and diplomatic achievements were experienced. Despite the successful wars and the lands won, Mahmud I looking for the future of the Ottoman in innovations to be taken from Europe, has been investigated the continuity of mentality transformation and scope areas and continuity of institutions such as Hendesehane and Humbarahane established for this purpose and his repercussions after the Mahmud I period.
Further Western architectural forms and reflections of life style, which penetrated Ottoman architecture and daily life from the beginning of the XVIII. Century, were evaluated the development line in Mahmud I period by comparing it with the periods before it. In his long reign, Mahmud I's architectural activities in Istanbul and the provinces, military schools opened during his period, cultural and artistic developments that gained momentum, the Sultan's attention to the construction of the library buildings that served as schools during this period and their effects on his subjects were generally studied by taking into account the transfers of the poets and chroniclers of the period.
