One of the most significant successes in the 20th century is to acquire the notion of human
rights. It has been defended by the human rights specialists that knowledge of human rights is
essential for the protection and application of it. In this study, it has been aimed to demonstrate
the ethical foundations of human rights, to discuss that human being has dignity and value, to
examine the international regulations related with human rights, and to develop a human rights
curriculum for adults to acquire this knowledge. In order to set forth the ethical foundations of
human rights, Aristotle's Plato's, Kant's, Nietzsche's, Scheler's, Hartmann’s and Kuçuradi's and
some other thinkers' ideas on human notion and ethic have been discussed. In addition, the
idea of right, justice and human rights, the historical background of human rights and
international regulations related with it.
In the experimental part of this study, qualitative and quantitative methods have been used
together. Quantitative model has been set using random pre-test post-test control group
comparison design. The Human Rights Curriculum developed by the researcher has been
applied to the experimental group. With the quantitative data acquired through Human Rights
Scale developed by the researcher and consisting of multiple-choices, the pre-test and post-test
score averages of the experimental group have been compared. The quantitative model has
been set analyzing the qualitative data and using Human Rights Interview Form, Human Rights
Diaries and Six Thinking Hat Technique Human Rights Evaluation Form, all developed by the
researcher. The study group in the research consists of the experimental group of 16 people
randomly selected among the two state schools and the control group of 16 people.
At the end of the research, it has been concluded that the idea of human value and dignity are
crucial in understanding human rights, that the human rights curriculum applied is effective and
that this education has increased the average scores significantly. It has been also put forward
that human rights have to preserve human dignity, that the importance of the kind of evaluation
setting forth the human dignity instead of value judgements of society have been realized by the
experimental group in the evaluation of the facts. This study is unique in the literature as the
crucial ideas of the human rights to be grounded, the content and the application methods of the
human rights curriculum are taken into consideration. As well as on international regulations
related to human rights, the grounding of the Human Rights Curriculum on ethics, the distinctness of the educational methods and techniques have been found effective. As a result of the efficiency of the curriculum developed, it has been concluded that it is appropriate to apply this curriculum to all adults.
