Duchenne Musküler Distrofi'li Hastalarda Dinamik Kol Egzersizinin Üst Ekstremite Fonksiyonlarına ve Genel Performansa Etkisi
Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of dynamic arm exercise on upper extremity functions, endurance and general performance in children with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). 24 children with DMD whose ages were between 8-15 and functional levels were between 1-4 according to Brooke Upper Extremity Functional Classification were included in the study. Dynamic arm exercise with arm ergometer was done to 12 children during 8 weeks in study group. 12 children in control group were given a home based programme including upper extremity strengthening exercises during 8 weeks. Demographic features of the subjects were recorded. Muscle strength, range of motion measures, timed performance test scores, ambulation status, arm-hand endurance and functioning were recorded before and after 8 weeks exercising programme. There were not any statistically significant difference in total upper extremity and trunk muscle strength (p>0,05) after dynamic arm exercise according to the initial assessment, while there were differences in muscle endurance, performance in daily living activities, arm functions, hand dexterity, general ambulation status and respiratory functions (p<0,05). There were statistically significant differences in hand grip strength and endurance (p<0,05) after upper extremity strengthening exercises according to the initial assessment, while there were not any differences in hand dexterity, arm functions, general ambulation status, performance in daily living activities and respiratory functions (p>0,05). It was shown that dynamic arm exercises have effects on endurance, performance, arm functioning, hand dexterity, ambulation status and respiratory functions without any critical change in muscle strength.
