ABSTRACT
ALTUNBEĞ TURGUT, Ceren, Middle East and Palestine (1920-1949), Master Thesis, Ankara, 2015.
The Middle East remained on the agenda throughout the previous centuries as it still does today. What has been experienced on this land all through the middle eastern geography, the cradle of various civilizations, is still a hot topic. The Jewish have carried out their fight with both the arab countries and the palestinians since the very first day of the idea of the establishment of a state by the Israelis in the middle east. In order to understand the palestinian problem, which still awaits to be solved, we have to study the causes of the problem in the first place. Zionism, Arab States, european states, usa etc could be included in the problem. We should not assess the problem in relation to external factors only; internal factors and regional elements should also be taken into account. Furthermore, the emergence of palestinian nationalism and the struggle arising from it are playing an effective role for the existence of the problem
In this study, the historical process from the British mandate of Palestine to the first Arab-İsrael war is discussed. It is impossible to approach the problem by excluding the Jews and the Ottoman Empire. In this regard, Zionism, which appeared of the stage of history as a political movement during 1880s, was also mentioned. Information was provided regarding the legal status of the region before the mandate administration, Jewish migration into the land and precautions of the Ottoman Empire for this. On the other hand, British plans for the solution of the problem, efforts by the powerful states of the era for the formation of a Jewish homeland in Palestine, Arabs' approach to the Palestinian claim, conflicts between the Arabs and the Jews and formation of Israel were analized.
