Özet
This study was performed for
the purpose of determining the scope of awareness and behavior of high school students in the
city of Urumçi Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in China in respect of nutrition and physical
activity. Randomly selected, a total of 998 students have agreed to participate in the research,
with a gender rate of 35.7% male (n=356) and 64.3% female (n=642) respondents, all attending
three academic institutions offering diverse education. Using a questionnaire, the general
information and particulars pertaining to the students, the anthropometric measurements, level of
nutritional background knowledge, nutritional habits, and range of physical activity and intensity
of impact from the media were scanned and ascertained. Mean age of the students was 17±1.1
years for males and 16±1.3 years for females. The mean body mass index BMI was found as
20.5±2.9 for males and 19±2.1 kg/m2 for females. A vast majority of the students were observed
to have a normal BMI (68% of males and 54.7% of females). Underweight at the rate of 44% was
detected among female students. Both male and female students displayed an equal proportion in
terms of adverse knowledge on nutrition (45.2% vs 42.1%, respectively). In the context of
schools, a significant difference was noticed among the male students in the level of
consciousness on nutrition (p<0.05). It was shown that 25.1% of females skipped a meal during a
regular day while the result among males was 17.7%. The ratio of frequent fast food consumption
exhibited a similar pattern in both sexes (21% vs 22.1%). Moreover, the correlation between the
fast food consumption habits and the BMI values of the students were statistically significant
(p<0.05). Males were found to harbor a better comprehension of physical activity in comparison
with their female counterparts (45 % vs 33.6 %). Also, 32% of males and 29.8% of females were
physically active. In all schools, a gymnastic session was applied course intervels. In regard to
the food advertisement, males and females were impacted at the same magnitude (55% and 59%,
respectively); while males were influenced more than the female participants in respect of the
physical activity commercials (65% and 57%, respectively). Conclusively, students awareness of
nutrition and physical activity must be enhanced, and they must be encouraged to participate in
active physical activity also during the off-school duration.
