Epilepsi Hastası Çocuklarda Ketojenik Diyetin Epileptik Nöbet Sayısı Üzerine Etkisinin Araştırılması
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to observe the effects of ketogenic diet on seizure number in children with epilepsy and to determine the effects on blood analyzes. This study was carried out with between ages of 2-18 patients with refractory epilepsy in Hacettepe University Ihsan Dogramacı Children’s Hospital between November 2010-June 2012.
Totally 11 patient have taken part in this study who are diagnosed as refractory epilepsy, and whose weekly seizure number is over 7 and cannot be brought under control with 2 epileptic drug and at the age of 8.54±4.34 years (2-18 years). For 3 months the-11-people study group including patients followed the ketogenic diet (80% of energy is fat,10% is protein,10% is carbohydrate) that is prepared according to their age and weight. (Daily energy of diet is provided from 50% percent of nutrition as ketogenic, and 50% percent of formula named KetoCal). At the end of three months, there has been a reduction that has a statistitical significance (54.84%). An increase is determined on the values of total cholesterol (12.54%), LDL (8%), triglyceride (16.61%). Besides, reduction is determined on the values of calcium (6.93%), albumin (10.46%), hemoglobin (2.07%).
The results of this study indicate that ketogenic diet has a reducing effect on the seizure number of the refractory epileptic chidren. This study also indicates that ketogenic diet may cause an increase on blood lipids. Ketogenic diet treatment of patients with refractory epilepsy in children and adolescents, can be used as an alternative treatment method.
