This study was conducted as a randomized controlled study to investigate the impact of the range of motion exercises on the prevention of delirium at the patients older than 65 years, not dependent to mechanical ventilation in intensive care unit. The study was completed in intensive care units in Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine Hospital. The study sample consisted of 47 intervention and 47 control patients. The inclusion criteria; no diagnosed delirium prior to the study, staying in the unit longer than 24 hours, older than 65 years old, communicating Turkish, and being volunteer to participate in the study. Daily range of motion exercise was administered to the intervention group. The data were collected using Patient Information Form, Confusion Assessment Method-Intensive Care Unit (CAM-ICU) to diagnose delirium, Richmond Agitation and Sedation Scale (RASS) to evaluate sedation level and delirium sub-type. The most frequent delirium type was mix type in intervention group (50%), and hypoactive (60%) in control group. The ratio of delirium development was 8.5% in the intervention group, and 21.3% in the control group. The median of delirium duration was 15 hours in intervention group, 38 hours in control group. While there was no statistical significant difference between groups in terms of delirium incidence and duration, this decrement was clinically significant (p>0.05). Although a significant difference was not determined in intervention and control groups in terms of scale sub-items, a decline was identified. Implementing range of motion exercise in intensive care units in order to prevent delirium and lessen the duration of delirium, evaluating patients not only for delirium development, but also in terms of scale sub-items presentation can be suggested according to the study results.
