Hair follicles are accepted as a component of skin in mammals. Considering the continuous contact with environment and microorganisms in the normal flora, it is crucial that various elements of immune system are necessary to reside within hair follicles. On the contrary the protection of hair follicles from the intense anti-infective elements and autoimmunity is mandatory; hence some antigens are not expressed in hair follicle and construct an immune privileged area. In this review, immunologic functions of hair follicle and hair follicle immunology's effect in pathogenesis of dermatological diseases are discussed in the light of recent studies.
