Abstract
The systems approach is a particular way of
thinking about a topic or problem that
concentrates on interrelationships. It is
characterised by the holistic view that the
whole is more than the sum of the parts, as
opposed to the elemantarist view that the
total is the sum of the parts. The systems
approach is not an attempt to understand
everything about a system, rather it tries to
include all factors relevant to the topic or
problem under consideration. The systems
approach by itself is not a methodology, but
involves the use of systems methodologies.
Therefore, there have been many attemps to
adapt systems thinking into practical
methodologies since 1970s. This paper
describes the terms 'system' and 'systems
approach' and presents a short historical
account of systems methodologies. In
addition, the importance of systems
approach and systems approch based
systems methodologies within organisational
(including libraries) problem solving is
stresed
