Abstract

What is the meaning of interior space? Beyond form and visuality, what are the factors that define interior space, that make a space 'inside'? What does it mean to be inside, what are the feelings of being inside? Do these semantic correspondences of the inside find expression in interior space representations? When we think about the interior space through the meaning and narrative of the inside, what kind of potentials can new methods offer for its representation? This study, which aims to define the interior through its spiritual dimensions as well as its physical dimensions, focuses on these questions.

While literary texts, which have the potential to reveal the spiritual dimension of space, are chosen as a means of thinking about the meaning of interior space within the scope of the study, textual representations also open architectural representation to discussion. The literary scope of the study is limited to fictional texts, and the field of analysis of the study is post-1950 Contemporary Turkish Literature novels and stories. Due to the fragmentation of the unity of time-space with the stream of consciousness technique, new formal searches, and new potentials emerging with the blurring of the boundaries between reality and fiction, the works analyzed were included in the range covering the period after 1950.

Structure of the thesis begins with the ‘inside as a safe and protected space’ isolated from the outside. It then continues with the narration of the 'inside as an uncanny space' blurred by the outside and sometimes by the outsider inside. This tense relationship between the inside and the outside, which both exist and sometimes threaten each other, is finally concluded with the narration of 'being on the borders of the inside/threshold experiences'.

The method of the study includes textual analysis and the reproduction of the data obtained as a result of this analysis through architectural representation. While the selected texts are opened to discussion through theoretical texts in other disciplines that can respond to their thematic approaches, an intertextual reading/seeing experience is aimed. While representation is not only a final product but also a method, it is suggested to use representation as a 'model of understanding'.
