Abstract

The quests for freedom, which soared in 1960’s, gained a universal dimension in May 1968; thereafter some changes and trends circulated all around the world. These quests found their most direct expression in painting, cinema and graphic arts. In Turkey, such important events as the government change after the military coup of May 27th; new opportunities, political polarizations, and social changes brought about after the 1961 constitution had a great impact on the visual culture. This study focuses on the similarities and the distinctions between the images, media, themes, and theories of Turkish and western visual arts under the major headings of government changes which concurrently happened in different countries around the world; May 1968; worker and student movements; problems of domestic migration and urbanization.
