Abstract

This study investigates the representation of intercultural content in two A2-level English language textbooks widely used in Türkiye: the locally published Uplift by the MoNE and the internationally produced Think Türkiye, adapted for the Turkish context. The research employs a qualitative content analysis method, drawing on several frameworks to examine the intercultural content of the selected textbooks. The analysis focuses on identifying and categorizing cultural elements in terms of their cultural origins, types, intercultural skills, and global issues. The intercultural content of the textbooks was analyzed using MAXQDA software. The data obtained from both textbooks was summarized in tables and narrative form, and the results were systematically compared. The findings reveal that although both textbooks frequently feature international target cultures that may enhance learners’ intercultural competence, their strong emphasis on cultural products, limited attention to deeper cultural dimensions, and the lack of source culture constrain this potential. The analysis indicates that Uplift promotes intercultural awareness by encouraging learners to compare and reflect on cultures and to gather cultural information; however, it gives limited attention to critical thinking and problem-solving. Think Türkiye, on the other hand, effectively fosters empathy and respect for diversity and includes activities that promote critical thinking, yet it provides few opportunities for independent cultural exploration. Both textbooks devote minimal attention to global issues beyond environmental themes and largely overlook linguistic diversity, particularly the concept of World Englishes. Overall, the study offers a comprehensive analysis of the intercultural content in the textbooks and provides insights for educators, textbook authors, curriculum designers, policymakers, and other stakeholders concerned with intercultural education in English language teaching.
