PHILIA KAVRAMININ PLASTİK SANATLARDA TEMSİLİ VE SEVGİNİN İMGELEŞMESİ

Abstract

This study examines the representations of the concept of love, one of the fundamental elements of human experience, in the plastic arts through the concept of philia in Ancient Greek philosophy and investigates the transformations it has undergone throughout the historical process. The primary aim of the research is to reveal how the concept of love has been interpreted in accordance with the philosophical, cultural, social, and artistic conditions of different periods and through which forms of expression it has been made visible in the plastic arts. Accordingly, the transformation of the concept of love throughout the historical process, extending from Antiquity to the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Enlightenment, Modernism, Postmodernism, and Contemporary Art periods, has been examined. In the research, a literature review was conducted by utilizing scientific, philosophical, sociological, psychological, and art-historical sources; artworks from different periods were examined, museum collections were researched, and visual documentation was carried out. The data obtained reveal that love has been represented in the plastic arts in various forms within the contexts of individual, social, religious, familial, romantic, and cultural relationships. In the practical section of the study, the data obtained from the theoretical research were associated with the researcher’s personal artistic practices produced using ceramic materials. Thus, the process through which the concept of philia is transformed into a tangible art object through form, material, technique, and plastic language was addressed. In addition to examining the philosophical and historical foundations of love within the context of the plastic arts, the study aims to transfer the theoretical data obtained into personal ceramic practices and to integrate the conceptual content with the artistic production process. As a result of the research, it is concluded that although the meaning and forms of expression of the concept of love have changed throughout history, it has maintained fundamental elements such as human relationships, belonging, attachment, and reciprocity; in the plastic arts, however, it has been reinterpreted in different forms depending on the conditions of each period and culture.
