Abstract

The United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aim to balance economic growth with environmental protection, and the energy sector is at the heart of this balance. Nuclear energy, a step ahead thanks to its low carbon emissions and 24/7 uninterrupted production capacity, can contribute to numerous development goals, including combating climate change and providing accessible, clean energy for all. The example of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant, Turkey's first nuclear power plant, concretely demonstrates the strategic role nuclear energy can play in sustainable development. The Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant project serves Turkey's strategic goals by supporting economic development by increasing Turkey's energy supply security, while also reducing dependence on fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions to achieve environmental goals. This study examines the role of nuclear energy in energy supply security, examines the impact of nuclear energy in Turkey within a sustainable development perspective, provides examples of nuclear energy's potential applications, and presents assessments of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant's impact on Turkey within the context of an economic, environmental, and social impact analysis.
