Abstract
Disasters are events that occur unexpectedly, have been repeated from past to present, and
disrupt social life with their effects. AFAD announced that nearly 32 thousand earthquake events
will occur in 2024 and more than 13 thousand as of May 2025. It is known that the earthquake
centered in Kahramanmaraş on February 6, 2023 deeply affected approximately 10 provinces.
Although disasters cannot be prevented, whether they occur naturally or by human intervention,
their effects can be controlled, and prevention efforts can reduce these negative effects of
disasters. After an earthquake, some responsibilities fall on public, private and civil organizations.
Following the February 6 earthquake, which had global repercussions, aid and mobilization efforts
have begun in the region. Since the first day, many professionals in the region have worked in
the field of first aid and psychosocial support. The relevant personnel both worked directly with
earthquake victims and witnessed the organization in the earthquake zone as a whole. For this
reason, it is aimed to understand the disaster field experiences of the relevant professional team.
The scarcity of postgraduate studies on earthquakes in the national literature was one of the main
motivations for this study. This study was conducted to understand the experiences of 22
professionals who went to the earthquake site and carried out crisis intervention practices after
the February 6 Earthquake. In this study designed with a qualitative research design, data were
obtained through in-depth interviews. The data obtained were analyzed using the MAXQDA 2024
program and presented in accordance with the purpose of the research. As a result of the
research, it was determined that the personnel went to the field voluntarily and the acute period
was experienced in an unplanned and uncoordinated manner. In addition, advantageous and
disadvantageous situations in the field are presented from various perspectives, and the
experiences of vulnerable groups are also included. While the study also included comments on
legislation and social policies from the perspective of the staff, it was mentioned that theory could
not be put into practice in the field. Although it is known that earthquakes are inevitable for our
country, this study has made an in-depth examination of the last and biggest disaster
phenomenon in our country, presented an up-to-date analysis to the literature and developed the
framework of evidence-based practices. It is thought that this study will shed light on studies on
disasters and earthquakes with a current view.
