Abstract

Composed by Yusuf Has Hacip in 1069, the Kutadgu Bilig is an indispensable work for the Turkish language. Following the discovery of its three surviving manuscripts, Reşit Rahmeti Arat’s monumental publications Kutadgu Bilig I: Text, Kutadgu Bilig II: Translation, and Kutadgu Bilig III: Index, constituted the most comprehensive study of the work to date. Since Arat’s critical edition, numerous studies on Kutadgu Bilig have continued to appear, among which proposals for corrections occupy a significant place in the literature. This study identifies and compiles the correction proposals concerning issues in Arat’s edition that scholars have considered necessary to amend. Based on the text of approximately 68,000 words, these corrections include reading suggestions at the word and couplet level, translation revisions, errors in the ordering or classification of entries in the Index, omissions of certain words, and misinterpretations of some lexical items. The proposed corrections have been systematically collected and examined in the section entitled “Correction Glossary.” Although many studies have been conducted on Kutadgu Bilig, the absence of a work that systematically and comprehensively compiles such corrections constitutes the starting point of this research. Despite the vast literature, no prior study has brought together these scattered proposals in an organized and holistic way. This research therefore seeks to fill this gap by presenting them in the form of a glossary. By compiling previously dispersed correction proposals, this study contributes both to a better understanding of the work and to the preparation of an updated, scholarly edition, something that has not been undertaken since Arat’s publication.
