Abstract

ABSTRACT SARAÇ, Şenay. The British Contribution to Teaching Turkish as a Foreign Language PhD Thesis, Ankara, 2018. The studies on Turkish has a very long history, and it has been dealt by not only local scholars but also international scholars. In this study, the British contribution to teaching Turkish as a foreign language has been investigated. We cannot deny the experience and success of the British in introducing and teaching the English language to people in different countries due to their imperialistic policies. Thus, an investigation of the books written by the British in a different language than their own, the subjects they included in their books, and the means of handling the subjects will provide a positive contribution to the subject of materials development. Seven books written by British writers has formed the sample of our study, and qualitative methods have been used. In our research we have investigated the chosen books based on the criterias that we have developed. In concluding the research, reaching an understanding of the nature of the historic relationship between the British and the Turks, the motivation of the British to learn Turkish as a foreign language and the historic transformation of this motivation is expected to be revealed. With the investigation of the books, we have been able to find the transformation of the syllabi and the teaching methods in a historical platform, and identifying the topics that were included in the books has enabled us with a different perspective in materials development. As the books have been investigated historically, observing the changes in the perception of the British towards the Turks, the changes in the motivation to learn the Turkish language and the presentation of the cultural aspects in the books may also make a contribution in the field. The historical changes in the Turkish language and vocabulary that are revealed by the investigation of the books may be a source for the study of Turkish language history.
