Les pratiques intratextuelles dans la traduction : les traductions en turc des œuvres d'Annie Ernaux

Abstract

In this case study, we examine intratextuality in its referential value and analyze intratextual relations in the Turkish translations of the works of Annie Ernaux. The aim is to position intratextuality within Translation Studies by expanding its theoretical and practical boundaries. The corpus, composed of translations produced by different translators, editors, and publishing houses –including retranslations and revisions– enables a holistic approach. Through comparison of source and target texts, we conduct an intratextual analysis based on close reading and a mixed-method research design, drawing on an “intratextual analysis model for translations” developed in this study. This model is combined with four intratextual translational techniques to more effectively describe the observed phenomena. The analysis focuses in particular on the repetition of form, voice, and authorial terms across source and target texts. These elements contribute to the semantic structuring of translated works, as well as to the textual identity of the author, translator, and editor, and to the familiarization of the target reader. To contextualize the analysis, we examine authorial, translatorial, editorial, and reader epitexts, and conduct semi-structured interviews with the translator Siren İdemen and the editor Şirin Etik. The findings show that analyzing authorial features alone is insufficient; their articulation with those of the translator, editor, and publishing house must also be considered. In the Turkish translations of Annie Ernaux published across three periods –Cem (1992-1994), İletişim (2000- 2001), and Can (2021-2025)– a marked increase in intratextual relations is observed in more recent publications. Unlike Cem (3) and İletişim (2), Can editions offer a more extensive corpus (9), largely translated by a single translator (Siren İdemen) and edited by a single editor (Şirin Etik); earlier translations have been revised and adapted in line with the current state of the author’s oeuvre.
