Abstract

This study examines the topic of emotional transfer in 2D platformer games. Although this genre is often seen as a commercial entertainment vehicle, it has the potential to create artistic and emotional experiences. In this context, the study focuses on the question of what applications can maximize emotional transfer in 2D platformer games. Thus, the aim is both to establish a framework for research on the subject and to reveal the emotional potential of this genre. Both theoretical and experimental methods were used in the research. Literature review, game analysis, creation of an original game prototype, player testing and survey methods were employed. The theoretical research addressed topics such as graphic design, emotion, and emotional design in the digital game environment, and investigated components of digital games such as story, narrative, world, environment, characters, and interface in this context. Following the theoretical research, the functional aspect of 2D platformer games and the typical visual structure resulting from this effect were examined. In the game analysis section, specific 2D platformer games were selected, and review criteria were established based on findings from the literature review. This section expanded on previous findings through examples and served as a source of inspiration for the next stage. In the next section, an original 2D platformer game prototype was developed based on the previous findings. In this application study, the graphical, narrative, and mechanical principles defined within the framework of emotional design theory were transformed into a concrete gaming experience. Playability tests and a survey conducted on the prototype analyzed the emotional effects of graphic design on players and the connection established with the story using quantitative and qualitative data. The findings show the decisive role of visual atmosphere and ludo-narrative harmony in conveying emotions.
