Abstract

Safe, secure and sustainable management of spent nuclear fuel from nuclear power reactors is a process that requires long-term commitment and should be supported by national and international strategies, procedures and policies, and is important for the sustainability of nuclear energy. Strategies such as storage, reprocessing, partitioning and transmutation or disposal can be applied in spent nuclear fuel management. During the selection and implementation of these strategies, the inventory of nuclear material in spent nuclear fuel must be known. This study aims to determine the nuclear material inventory of the fuel assemblies that will be included in the first core of the VVER-1200 (Vodo-Vodyanoy Energetic Reaktor) reactors under construction in Mersin Akkuyu in our country, when they are removed from the reactor and to generate a usable data set in spent fuel management. For this purpose, burnup analyses were performed with the Serpent Monte Carlo code for the fuel assemblies that may be loaded to the first core of the VVER-1200 reactor. As a result of the analyses, data sets related to the important properties of spent nuclear fuel assemblies such as radioisotope content, activity and thermal power were generated. Additionally, the study investigated the impact of several parameters on the nuclear material inventory in spent nuclear fuel, including the burnup level of fuel assemblies, the initial enrichment of uranium, the boric acid concentration in the light water coolant and moderator, the number of integrated burnable absorber (IBA) rods, the enrichment of the IBA rods and the amount of gadolinium (Gd) used as a neutron absorber.
