Abstract
The aim of this study was to translate, culturally adapt, and evaluate the validity and reliability of the Turkish versions of the Participation and Activity Inventory for Children and Youth (PAI-CY) for the 0–2-year and 3–6-year age groups, which assess the participation levels and needs of children with visual impairment in daily life activities. Parents/caregivers of children with visual impairment aged 0–2 years (n = 135) and 3–6 years (n = 175) were included in the study. The linguistic and cultural adaptation process was conducted in accordance with the protocol proposed by Beaton et al. Validity analyses included content validity, construct validity, and known-groups validity. Construct validity was examined using the Graded Response Model (GRM) within the framework of Item Response Theory (IRT), and the assumptions of unidimensionality, local independence, and monotonicity were found to be satisfied for both age versions. Eigenvalue ratios indicated that both versions exhibited unidimensional structure. Known-groups validity analyses demonstrated that the
scales were able to discriminate between children with different levels of visual impairment. Reliability analyses included internal consistency and test–retest reliability. The internal consistency coefficients were found to be Cronbach's α = 0.938 for the 0–2-year version and Cronbach's α = 0.942 for the 3–6-year version. Test–retest reliability was found to be ICC= 0.938 for the PAI-CY 0–2 years and ICC = 0.915 for the PAI-CY 3–6 years. Consequently, the Turkish versions of the PAI-CY 0–2 years and PAI-CY 3–6 years were found to be valid and reliable instruments for assessing participation and activity levels in children with visual impairment aged 0–6 years.
